 Born Strasbourg, France 22/10/1949

His favourite boyhood team was Borussia Monchengladbach

First Semi-Pro contract was with Mulhouse and he earned £50 a week, he played for them for three years.

His next Semi-Pro club was AS Vauban where he played in defence and midfield but never really made either position his own. It was thought he was a good reader of the game but he lacked pace and was too one footed (right foot)

He then moved to his home town club, Strasbourg as reserve team coach and it was expected to end his playing days but he became a regular in the reserve team and played some senior games when he was needed, at the same time his coaching role gave him the opportunity to test his tactical ideas against other teams and coaches.

He had a minor role in the team when Strasbourg won the French title in 1979

From Strasbourg he went on to join the coaching staff at AS Cannes but was only there for a single season.

By this time he could speak English French German Spainish and Portuguese

In 1984 he got his chance to become a first team manager after joining AS Nancy

AS Nancy, a club with no money and an average squad was relegated under Wenger at the end of the 1986/1987 season

He then bacame disillusioned with Nancy and when AS Monaco wanted him, It was time for him to step up to a big club.

In his first season at AS Monaco they won the League title (1987/1988)

In 1990/1991 he won the French Cup with AS Monaco

In 1992 AS Monaco lost the final of the Cup Winners Cup but only 24 hours ealier 18 people were killed at a French Cup Semi-Final game and none of the team were "up" for this game. The Final still went ahead.

In 1992 AS Monaco also got to the French Cup Final but that was cancelled out of respect for the 18 killed in the previous round.

After a poor 1993/1994 season and then a poor start to the 1994/1995 season he was sacked by AS Monaco

From there he was a Manager in demand but surprised everyone in football by accepting a job in Japan with Nagoya Grampus Eight, owned by car company Toyota. He thought long and hard for months about taking the job before he finally excepted. He found the first three months in Japan very hard and was having second thoughts about the move, that was not helped when his new team lost eight out of their first ten games but things all started to come together and the team then started to move up the table. Communication problems between him and the players were a major factor in the early season problems. Grampus then went on to win seven of their next nine games and the team went from strength to strength.

The team ended the 2005 season season in 2nd place in the J League

On the 01/01/1996 Grumpus won their first ever prize with a 3-0 win over Hiroshima to lift the Emperor's Cup. This alone was to make Wenger a club LEGEND and seal his place in their history books.

He then steered Grampus to win the Japanese Super Cup and with rumours of Arsenal, Spurs and Strasbourg now wanting his services, his friendship with Arsenal's David Dein was the deciding factor and in September 1996 a deal was done to bring the Frenchman back to Europe as the next Arsenal Manager.
