During CUP FINAL'S at this time the domestic LEAGUE season carried on as usual with all the other teams playing as if it was a normal day

Work to build the WEST STAND started in May 1932 as soon as the 1931/1932 season had finished. On 12/11/1932 just SIX months later, the stand was finished. The new WEST STAND stood 315 ft long and was 70 ft high with a capacity that could house 4100 seated and stand another 17.000. The WEST STAND cost £45.000 to build and was the most EXPENSIVE STAND in Britain at that time with the best seat cost 5 shillings (25p)
Meanwhile just before the WEST STAND was completed, GILLESPIE ROAD Underground station was renamed ARSENAL (HIGHBURY HILL) on the 05/11/1932 after HERBERT CHAPMAN had fought to get the Station's name changed

The FIRST game with the new WEST STAND in use was a 1-0 win over Newcastle on the 12/11/1932. The OFFICIAL opening of the stand was by the PRINCE of WALES on the 10/12/1932 for the game was against Chelsea which Arsenal won 4-1. Just 14 days later and the NEXT home game, was an AMAZING 9-2 win against Sheffield United on the 24/12/1932. "Its a funny ol game" as someone once said because just TWO days after scoring NINE, Arsenal lost 2-1 at home to Leeds United on the 26/12/1932. The next three home games brought two wins and a draw before the crowd got more top value for money with an 8-0 thrashing of Blackburn Rovers on the 25/02/1933

During the 2nd World War Arsenal shared White Hart Lane with Spurs to complete their semi-friendly Wartime commitments
Highbury was used in any way needed during the 2nd world War including as an AIR RAID SHELTER, a FIRST AID CENTRE, along with housing FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT for the surrounding area
Football was encouraged during the war not only to give some entertainment to the public but to try to keep morale up as well
Manager GEORGE ALLISON (middle of picture, below) was too old to fight, so he did as much as he could at Highbury for the community, so much so he turned the Referee's room into a flat so he could spend as much time as possible at the Stadium
In 1941 Arsenal played a War time friendly against CLAPTON ORIENT and won 15-2. Before the War started LESLIE COMPTON was a reserve defender who converted to a striker during the war scored 10 (TEN) of the goals!
As so many PRO players were also moved around the country as part of their War time duties they could "GUEST" for the local PRO teams in their area. Arsenal player TOMMY LAWTON based in the North played TWICE on a Christmas day. In the morning for Everton and in the afternoon for Tranmere
